Curacao Honeymoon & Wedding Guide: Around the Island
Curacao is an interesting place. Its dutch, but its south american. Its tropical, but its a desert. Its rich, but its poor. As usual, I loved finding my way into the nitty-gritty parts of town and seeing people live their lives away from the tourist’s eye. The colorful little shacks on the mountainsides are adorable and the people who live in them are wonderful. There are wild chickens running around. Laundry blowing on the clotheslines. Most of the natives speak dutch, but the ones who did speak english were very nice. We loved wandering around these rural bits of the island.
Downtown Willemstad is fun in a whole different way. Every morning farmers from Venezeula make the 20 mile ride to Willemstad in their tiny little boats. They lug fruits and vegetables to sell in the dockside markets to tourists and island natives. These rickety little boats and the people who fill them are just full of character. . Just like the rest of the island, Willemstad is filled with colorful buildiings. Only here, they are in a tall dutch style. We had so much fun wandering about. Anyone wanting to see more of this island should check out our underwater adventures and desert exploration. For being such a tiny island, there is a lot to see in Curacao.
