Salt Creek Recreation Area |Washington
Something really cool to experience on the Pacific Northwest coast is the tidal pools. I’ve seen pictures of starfish and anemones on the rocks at low tide. When inquiring about this, the owner of the Elwha Dam RV Park recommended that we visit the Salt Creek Recreation area. The Salt Creek Recreation Area is located only about 10 minutes from our campground and it was free to get in.
The trick in visiting is to schedule your hike in at low tide so that you can see as much as possible. Better yet, schedule your visit during a minus tide – aka an unusually low tide- so that even more little sea creatures will be exposed. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any minus tides predicted during our visit, but we tried to time our hike so we could wander the rocks when the sea was low.
The rocks were very jagged and slippery- just as a word of caution to anyone planning to visit. But as long as you are careful, its a very interesting place. There were all kinds of mussels, and some colorful anemones. One little girl and her dad found some kind of rolly polly like sea creature they were kind enough to show me. Another visitor found a tiny little starfish seeking refuge inside of a barnacle. Being out there was like a natural treasure hunt. It was really fun!
