Big Bend National Park | Texas
Before this trip, I had never heard of Big Bend National Park. Actually, there were a lot of beautiful places we had never heard of, but this place is worth coming back to. Big Bend is located right along the border of Mexico and Texas. Its full of low mountain ranges and open desert. Driving in I saw five Roadrunner birds right along the road. That was pretty exciting… at least for me.
At one point during our drive through Big Bend we were located only 10 miles away from the Mexico border. In fact, we had to stop through a border patrol check on our way back out. This area is very very sparse. Fortunately, the park service has its own gas station in the middle of the park, but there is absolutely nothing for a couple hours in either direction. The day of our visit happened to be during Spring Break week, so many of the campgrounds were full. However, we still found complete solitude along the side of the road where we hiked. We walked around and watched the sunset in the desert. It was beautiful.
After this stop, we blazed our way through Texas and onto South Carolina. A series of storms had been hitting the South causing major flooding and we didn’t want to get caught in the next one. More of our Charleston adventures coming up soon!
